Specialists at the V.A. Almazov Federal Heart, Blood and Endocrinology Center in St. Petersburg, Russia, have opened the door for the country to begin using cryoablation to treat heart arrhythmia.

Fibrilliation of auricles is one of the most widespread types of arrhythmia. Cryoablation methods use cryogenics to freeze sections of the cardiac muscle and cure the illness.

Dmitry Kebedev, a surgeon at the Center, says that cryoablation methods have benefits such as reduced operating times and a lessened risk of complications. The Center’s recent introduction of cryoablation as a treatment option is just the first step toward widespread use in hospitals across Russia.

It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of Russians currently suffer from heart arrhythmia.
