I’m looking for data on the thermal contraction value for Aluminum 6061-T6. Can you guide me in the right direction?

The data that you are looking for may be found in:

T.F. Durham, R.M. McClintock, and R.P. Reed, “Cryogenic Materials Data Handbook,” National Bureau of Standards, PB 171809, Boulder, CO, pg. 69.This publication shows data for 6061-T6 aluminum between about 20 K and 500 K.

See also: Alcoa Aluminum Handbook, ALCOA, Pittsburgh, PA.

There are two references for this data:
“Cryogenic Systems” – McGraw Hill, 1966, page 35
“Cryogenic Engineering” by Thomas Flynn – Marcel Dekkle, Inc. 1997 page 236 with plot of data on page 238.

The Flynn book is easiest to use and understand. Tom Flynn’s email is thomasmflynn@comcast.net.

Cryodata sells two computer programs which contain Aluminum expansivity data, among other material properties. One is Cryocomp, by Phill Eckels, a practicing engineer. Cryocomp contains specific heat, expansivity, conductivity and resistivity properties of 61 different materials used in cryogenic construction, and generates properties tables on any temperature grid which you input. It includes data on nominally pure aluminum, and on 6061 T6 aluminum. The derived contraction data is almost the same for both of these materials: for example, contraction from 293 K to 4.2 K calculates to 0.409% for the “pure” aluminum and 0.419% for 6061. I am not sure that the number difference is meaningful.

The other program is Metalpak, which I wrote, based a bit more on physics of pure metals. Metalpak does not include alloys. An output from Metalpak is appended below. You can see that it gives a contraction of 0.415% for from 293 to 4 K. Thermal conductivity is strongly controlled by impurities or fabrication details, but specific heat and expansivity are not.

You can find more information on these programs at Cryodata.com, but Cryodata sales are now handled by htess.com.
