The US Department of Energy announced on December 11 that Michigan State University has been selected as the site for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), a $550 million research facility that will study rare nuclear isotopes and the evolution of the cosmos. It will take nearly a decade to design and build the facility, which will provide opportunities to a large group of university students and scientists from around the world. The research done at FRIB will have a major impact on applications in the areas of materials science, medicine and stockpile stewardship.

The National Superconducting Cycolotron Laboratory (NSCL) is lead by Professor C. Konrad Gelbke, who will also lead the efforts to establish FRIB at MSU.
