The UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) announced last week that it will withdraw from 25 leading international science projects over the next five years in an effort to make up for a £40 million shortfall in funding. The STFC will hold discussions with national and international partners over the next few months to iron out details of how the cuts will be implemented.

Some of the projects that will no longer be supported are as follows:

Astronomy:
Auger
Inverse Square Law
ROSA
The Liverpool Telescope
Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array regional center
The Joint Institute for Very Long Baseline Interferometry

Particle Physics:
UK’s contribution to CDF and D0 experiments at Fermilab
eEDM
Low Mass
MINOS
Particle Calorimeter
Spider

Space Missions:
Cassini
Cluster
Solar and Heliospheric Observatory
Venus Express and XMM-Newton

The STFC is also planning to cut funding for studentships and fellowships by 25% over the next five years.
