Avard Fox Fairbanks, physicist, mathematician and inventor, passed away March 22, 2010. Fairbanks received his Master’s degree in physics from the University of Michigan, and during World War II, performed research on naval infrared radar as a civilian under Admiral Rickover. After enrolling at Cal Tech for a doctoral program, he took a position with North American Aviation Corporation working in cryogenics, electro-optics and lasers.
