Ability Engineering Technology Inc., South Holland IL, is building two new cryostats that will more than triple Fermilab’s current SRF cavity testing capabilities. The company, which has been working with Fermilab for more than 20 years, received funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for the project.

The pair of 20-foot-long cryostats will be used to test SRF cavities required for future projects, including Project X. As part of the testing, cavities are placed in a cryostat’s inner chamber and tested at temperatures between 1.5 and 2 K. Currently, Fermilab is conducting testing with a single cryostat that can test a pair of nine-cell SRF cavities each week.

Ability president Eugene Botsoe said that the project allowed the company to offer job opportunities to several people. “This has been a good project for us,” he said.
