July 21st marked the first time a group of companies, institutions, research labs and universities met under the banner of the “Cryogenics Cluster.” The group, which has 18 members, is mostly made of corporate members of the British Cryogenics Council, which will be the unifying organization behind the new group. The idea for the group was initially conceived as a bid for the National Cluster Mark, an awards competition held last year.
Initiatives are now underway to develop internet networking tools, to explore improved preparation of graduates for the sector, and to develop a framework of engineering standards appropriate for a wide range of applications. Another “Cryogenics Cluster Day” will be held on September 22nd at Rutherford Appleton Lab, and working groups will meet on October 13th to address the three initiatives.
