Horst Simon named Deputy Director of Berkeley Lab

Horst Simon has been named Deputy Director of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He succeeds Jay Keasling, who served as interim Deputy Director. Simon is an internationally recognized expert in computer science and applied mathematics.

In his new role, Simon will help Berkeley Lab Director Paul Alivisatos in a number of functions relating to major scientific initiatives, strategic research investments and maintenance of the intellectual vitality of the lab.

“Horst is a strong leader who has helped to lead a tremendously productive program in high performance computing that is world-class,” said Alivisatos.

Simon formerly served as Associate Lab Director for Computing Sciences. He has been with Berkeley Lab since 1996, when he was brought on as director of the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC).

Simon earned his undergraduate degree in mathematics from the Technische Universtat in Berlin, Germany and a PhD in mathematics from UC-Berkeley. He is currently an adjunct professor in the College of Engineering at UC-Berkeley.
