UCLA Engineering has established the Traugott and Dorothea Frederking Endowed Chair in Cryogenics. The chair will support junior faculty for terms up to five years as they build their careers in areas related to cryogenics.
Traugott Frederking was professor emeritus of chemical engineering and a world-renowned expert in the field of cryogenics. He made significant contributions to the design and performance of miniaturized heat exchangers. He also worked with superconducting magnets at extremely low temperatures.
Dr. Frederking received many honors and awards during his career, such as the R.B. Scott Memorial Award of the Cryogenic Engineering Conference, 1971. He was elected to the grade of Fellow of the AIChE in 1985. He served as the Chairman and organizer of numerous conferences, including the Cryogenic Engineering Conference.
On December 24, 2000, Dr. Frederking was honored as the first Fellow of the Cryogenic Society of America. The award was presented to him by Dr. Sidney Yuan, one of Dr. Frederking’s PhD graduates.
Dr. Frederking passed away in June of 2001.
The gift was made possible by Dorothea Frederking, who will leave the couple’s estate to the school. Once the estate is distributed, a senior faculty member who is recognized by the cryogenics community and conducting experimental research in cryogenics will be permanently appointed to the chair.
