A team of US scientists led by Petar Maksimovic, Assistant Professor of Physics at Johns Hopkins University, has discovered two new subatomic particles. The rare particles are important relatives of the proton and neutron and are members of the baryonic family, named for the Greek word barys, meaning heavy. Baryons are particles containing three quarks, which are the basic building blocks of matter.
