Construction of the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), a new $1.2 billion particle accelerator, will begin in the German city of Darmstadt as part of a project by the German Society for Heavy Ion Research (GSI). With a circumference of over a kilometer at 17 meters underground, the accelerator will help shed light on the beginnings of the universe. Unlike CERN’s nearly completed particle accelerator in Switzerland, the FAIR project will focus on the intensity of its particle beam rather than on the speed achieved.
