icc18_highlightThe 18th International Cryocooler Conference (ICC18) was held June 9-12 in Syracuse NY at the beautiful Syracuse University campus. Conference Chairman Rich Dausman and Co-chairman Dr. Chao Wang, both of Cryomech, Inc., hosted 161 attendees, including 11 students and six retirees, representing 14 different countries.

The setting at the university provided centralized, convenient registration and technical paper processing in an area adjacent to the auditorium where all papers were presented.

Attendees included commercial and military cryocooler users; mechanical, electrical and software engineers engaged in cryocooler design; system engineers responsible for selecting and/or integrating cryocoolers; educators, particularly those interested in cryogenics and/or thermal management; and cryogenic component manufacturers and suppliers.

Just before the conference, CSA sponsored a short course, “Foundations of Cryocoolers,” taught by Drs. Ray Radebaugh, retired from NIST Boulder, and Phil Spoor, Chart Qdrive, that filled the meeting room to capacity.

The welcome reception was held on Monday, June 9, at Club 4-4 in the Syracuse University Carrier Dome, a short walk from the conference hotel. Tours were available for those interested. From papers presented during the next days, attendees learned about the latest developments in cryocooler technology and were able to discuss them with colleagues from around the world.

Program Chair Carl Kirkconnell and Deputy Program Chair Michael Ellis, both of Iris Technology, organized a diverse selection of papers that inspired excellent networking during the entire conference.

The conference dinner was held on Wednesday evening, June 11, at the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology, the M.O.S.T., situated in the heart of Syracuse’s Armory Square. Food was provided by the nationally acclaimed Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, accompanied by live entertainment.
