Cryogenics was at the heart of an ovary transplant that produced the first baby to be born as a result of the successful transplant. The Infertility Center in St. Louis used an ovary from the mother’s twin sister for the transplant, which had been frozen cryogenically. The mother experienced premature menopause at age 15, but the transplant allowed her to give birth at age 38.
Ovaries can be frozen indefinitely, allowing women to preserve their fertility should they decide to have children later in life, or in other cases like that of a cancer patient who would normally become infertile due to chemotherapy.
