The Department of Energy’s Office of High Energy Physics has released a 100-page report entitled “Accelerators for America’s Future” to review the findings of a series of workshops held almost a year ago. The one-day symposium, presented under the same name, featured workshops that summarized key application areas.
The “Accelerators” report reviews the contributions of accelerators in a variety of industries, such as Energy and Environment, Industry, Medicine, National Security and Discovery Science. While the general public may only think of accelerators in the context of large devices for basic research, the report states that an estimated 30,000 particle accelerators are in use worldwide.
Walter Henning and Charles Shank, symposium and workshop chairs, describe the report as a “resource for agencies as they develop their agendas and programs.” The Office of Science will use the report to aid in planning for future technology R&D.
