Paul Alivisatos was recently named director of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory after holding the position of interim director since January 2009. He replaces Steven Chu, who is now the US Secretary of Energy. The appointment, which takes effect immediately, was made by the University of California Board of Regents. UC manages the laboratory.
In his time as interim director, Alivisatos successfully led the lab in obtaining more than $220 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that will further the lab’s work in many areas.
Before his most recent appointment, Alivisatos served as the deputy director of Berkeley Lab, which entailed serving as the lab’s chief research officer and overseeing the discretionary research budget, key research initiatives and technology transfer functions.
“I am confident that Paul is the right leader for the Berkeley Lab at this pivotal point in its history,” said UC President Mark Yudof. “Under his leadership, Berkeley Lab will continue to make great contributions in science and to the world around us.”
