Brookhaven National Laboratory and Advanced Energy Systems have opened a hi-tech facility at the AES site that will produce superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities for particle accelerators. Brookhaven purchased equipment worth $2 million as its contribution to the project, while AES invested in infrastructure improvements needed to expand its operations. According to Tony Favale, AES founder and president, the company plans to add 10 to 15 employees to its 28-person staff by 2011.

The AES facilities will be used to develop SRF cavities for future upgrades to Brookhaven’s Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), as well as for the proposed next generation electron-ion collider, eRHIC. In addition, AES has won several contracts worth more than $11 million to produce SRF cavities for institutions around the world.

“The effort by Brookhaven Lab and New York State to support the growth of AES has already resulted in more hi-tech jobs for Long Island, with more to come in the future,” said Favale. “It’s a testament to what you can achieve when government helps small businesses grow.”
