Quantum Design, a leading developer of cryogenic measurement systems based in San Diego, California, has announced a definitive agreement to acquire the NanoScience Division of Oxford Instruments. Located in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, NanoScience is a global innovator in ultra-low-temperature cryogenic instrumentation. The acquisition, expected to close by the end of September pending regulatory approval, brings together two long-established leaders in cryogenic technology and physical property measurement systems.

This union marks a significant step forward in the evolution of cryogenic science and instrumentation. By combining complementary portfolios and deep engineering expertise, Quantum Design and NanoScience are poised to deliver an expanded suite of tools designed to serve a broad range of scientific applications—from quantum computing and condensed matter physics to advanced materials research and next-generation memory storage.

“I am excited to accelerate Quantum Design and NanoScience business units into the future with the extensive synergistic capabilities of these two great leaders in cryogenic measurement and instrumentation,” said Stuart Schoenmann, CEO of Quantum Design. “NanoScience’s historic Tubney Woods factory will expand our global manufacturing footprint with significant facilities that were the birthplace of superconducting magnet technologies.”

The acquisition significantly increases Quantum Design’s global presence, with manufacturing and support capabilities now spanning three continents. Customers can expect not only broader access to existing technologies but also new developments at the intersection of ultra-low temperature physics, magnetometry, and superconductivity.

With more products, more breakthrough technologies, and more opportunities for discovery, the combined company is well-positioned to drive the future of cryogenic science.

Quantum Design is backed by Carlson Private Capital Partners, a private investment firm formed by the Carlson family, known for its entrepreneurial legacy dating back to 1938.
